My Approach to SEO and Digital Marketing for Malaysian SMEs, by Lee Eu Ston
All Marketing Notes

My approach to digital marketing starts with understanding the business behind the campaign.

Who are its customers? What problem does it solve? Why should someone choose it? What happens after a potential customer makes an enquiry?

These questions shape how I think about SEO, advertising, websites and content. Choosing a platform comes later.

Through my work at DigitaLee Marketing and building BetulBetul.com, I have become increasingly interested in how Malaysian SMEs can build a digital presence that supports both customer enquiries and lasting visibility.

An advertisement can introduce a business. A useful website can explain its services. A well-documented founder story can help people understand who is behind it.

I want these elements to work together.

Start With the Business and Its Customers

Before deciding what to publish or where to advertise, I want to understand what the business needs to achieve.

“More exposure” is a starting point, but it needs a clearer definition. A cleaning company might need regular office contracts. A training provider might want registrations for a specific workshop. A property agency might want enquiries from owners considering selling.

Each objective calls for different messages, content and follow-up.

My starting questions are straightforward:

  • Which service or product should we prioritise?
  • Who is most likely to need it?
  • What information do they need before deciding?
  • What makes the offer credible?
  • What action should they take next?

For an SME with limited resources, this focus matters. A manageable campaign with a clear purpose is easier to assess and improve.

Bring Strategy, Content and the Website Together

At DigitaLee Marketing, our services span social media marketing, SEO, advertising, photography, video, websites and landing pages.

That range reflects how connected these activities are. A campaign needs a message, the right content to communicate it and a suitable destination for interested customers.

For example, a property campaign may need photographs that explain the space, a video that shows the layout, advertising that introduces the project and a landing page containing the details buyers need.

The same principle applies to smaller service businesses.

A professional photograph can attract attention, but customers still need to understand what the service includes. A website can explain the offer, but the enquiry process must also be clear.

My approach is to look at the whole journey from first impression to customer conversation.

Treat SEO as Useful Information Made Discoverable

When I think about SEO for Malaysian SMEs, I start with the questions customers ask.

Someone searching for a service may want to know whether the business covers their location, how the process works, what affects pricing or what they should prepare before requesting a quotation.

Those questions provide a practical foundation for website content.

A service page should explain the service properly. An article should answer a specific question. An about page should help readers understand the people and experience behind the business.

I also want the website to be organised clearly, with descriptive titles, relevant links and pages that are comfortable to read on a phone.

My aim is to make useful information easier to find and understand. Repeating a keyword throughout a page does little for a reader if the important questions remain unanswered.

Build a Digital Presence Beyond Individual Campaigns

Advertising has a valuable role, especially when a business needs to promote an offer or reach potential customers.

Alongside campaigns, I want businesses to develop assets they can continue improving: service pages, project explanations, photographs, videos and helpful articles.

These give customers somewhere to learn more after seeing an advertisement, receiving a recommendation or searching for the company.

A business with years of experience may still have very little information online explaining its work. Documenting that experience gives it a clearer public presence.

This idea also sits behind my interest in founder stories and business profiles.

What Building BetulBetul.com Has Reinforced

I started BetulBetul.com to document real Malaysian people, businesses and stories.

Its positioning, “Real People. Real Stories.”, reflects the kind of platform I want to build: a place where readers can discover businesses, founders and local voices worth knowing.

Building it has reinforced several principles that influence how I approach digital marketing.

Specific Details Make a Story Worth Reading

A statement such as “we provide excellent service” leaves many questions unanswered.

The story becomes more useful when it explains how the business began, what it does, who it serves and what its work involves.

For an SME, those details can help a potential customer understand the business beyond its logo and promotional message.

The Person Behind the Business Matters

A founder profile gives space to explain motivation, experience and direction.

Why did the person start the company? What problem did they want to address? What are they trying to build?

These questions can produce a more meaningful introduction than a list of services alone.

I see this as an important part of personal branding: making someone’s work and contribution easier to understand.

Publishing Comes With Responsibility

A business story should distinguish facts, opinions and ambitions.

Dates, names, quotations and claims need checking. Plans should be presented as plans. Promotional content should avoid implying achievements or results that cannot be supported.

This standard matters to me because the usefulness of a story depends on whether readers can trust what it says.

A Story Needs a Clear Place to Live

Publishing an article is one step. Readers should also be able to find it, understand its subject and explore related information.

That means thinking about titles, navigation, links and the relationship between stories.

The same thinking applies to an SME website. Individual pages become more useful when they form a coherent explanation of the business.

Keep Storytelling and SEO Claims in Perspective

I believe a well-written business profile can help people discover and understand a company. However, I do not treat an article or backlink as a guarantee of search rankings, enquiries or sales.

BetulBetul.com is also a platform I founded, so its coverage should be understood in that context.

My focus is on creating information that has a reason to exist for readers. A founder story should tell a worthwhile story. A service page should help someone assess a service. A link should take the reader somewhere relevant.

That is the standard I want to bring to both marketing content and publishing.

Match the Language to the Audience

For Malaysian SMEs, language choices deserve attention early.

A business may serve customers who prefer English, Bahasa Malaysia or Chinese. The right approach depends on the audience, location and service.

I want the wording to sound natural to the people reading it. That includes using familiar terms, explaining technical subjects clearly and making the enquiry process understandable.

If a business publishes in several languages, it should also consider whether its team can support the enquiries those pages generate.

Measure What Happens After Attention

Visibility is useful, but I also want to understand what happens next.

Are enquiries relevant? Do customers understand the offer? Are they within the service area? Does the team respond consistently? Which enquiries become appointments, quotations or sales?

These questions help connect marketing activity with business decisions.

Repeated customer questions can also reveal gaps in the content. If people keep asking what a package includes, that information may need to be clearer on the page.

I see measurement as a way to improve the customer journey and decide what deserves further investment.

Start With a Practical First Step

An SME does not need to do everything at once.

My preferred starting point is to identify the most important gap. That might be an unclear service page, inconsistent business information, a weak enquiry process or a campaign without a focused offer.

Then we can choose a manageable priority, define what improvement would look like and review the outcome.

My work through DigitaLee Marketing and BetulBetul.com connects around one purpose: helping good businesses explain themselves clearly and become easier to discover.
