If I started my marketing journey again, I would still want to learn how to create content, build websites and run campaigns.
But I would give more attention to the decisions behind that work.
What am I trying to build? Who am I trying to help? Which skills deserve deeper practice? What should I document while the experience is still fresh?
Since beginning my marketing career in 2019, my work has developed through DigitaLee Marketing and, more recently, building BetulBetul.com.
One is a marketing business. The other is a platform for Malaysian people, businesses and stories. Working on both gives me different reasons to think about visibility, credibility and how I use my time.
If I could begin again, these are the priorities I would bring forward.
1. I Would Define My Direction Earlier
Marketing offers plenty to learn: advertising, copywriting, photography, video, websites, SEO and new tools.
That variety is part of what interests me. DigitaLee Marketing brings several of these services together, from social media and visual production to websites and marketing guidance.
If I started again, I would give myself a clearer question alongside learning each skill:
How does this help the kind of business I want to serve?
For example, learning video production becomes more purposeful when I understand what the viewer needs to see. Building a landing page becomes more focused when I know which customer question it must answer.
I would still explore, but I would connect that exploration to a direction I could explain.
2. I Would Learn More About the Customer’s Decision
A campaign is only one part of the customer’s experience.
Someone sees an advertisement, visits a page, compares information and decides whether to enquire. After that, the business needs to respond and help the person take the next step.
If I began again, I would spend more time understanding that whole process.
At DigitaLee Marketing, this way of thinking connects the services we offer. Photographs, videos, advertising and websites each have a role, but they need a shared purpose.
For a property campaign, a video might introduce the space while the landing page explains the project and invites a viewing enquiry. For another SME, the important step may be helping customers prepare the information needed for a quotation.
Personally, I would practise asking better questions before moving into production.
Explore My Digital Marketing Approach3. I Would Document My Work as I Went
One habit I would build earlier is keeping a useful record of the work.
That means more than saving finished designs or screenshots. I would record the objective, the audience, the decisions made and what could reasonably be learned from the outcome.
A simple project note could answer:
- What were we trying to achieve?
- What information shaped the approach?
- What did we produce or change?
- What happened next?
- What would we investigate or improve?
This would help me reflect more carefully and explain my work more clearly.
For DigitaLee Marketing, documentation can support project reviews and useful portfolio material, subject to client permission. For BetulBetul.com, it can preserve the sources, interviews and checks behind a story.
I would treat documentation as part of finishing the work.
4. I Would Invest Earlier in Content With a Lasting Purpose
My interest in BetulBetul.com grew partly from thinking about how Malaysian businesses are represented online.
A company may have years of experience, yet very little searchable information explaining its founder, background or work. A social media presence may introduce it without telling much of its story.
That is one reason I wanted to build a platform around “Real People. Real Stories.”
If I started my marketing journey again, I would make more time for content that explains something properly: a useful service page, a founder profile, a project explanation or an article answering a customer’s question.
These assets still need maintenance, and their publication does not guarantee traffic. But they give a business information it can continue developing and sharing.
For my own development, I would work on becoming a better interviewer and editor alongside becoming a better marketer.
Read What Building BetulBetul Is Teaching Me5. I Would Make the Purpose of Each Brand Clear
Building two brands raises a question I would want to answer early: what should people expect from each one?
DigitaLee Marketing helps businesses with marketing services. BetulBetul.com introduces people, companies and local stories.
Their subjects can overlap, but their purposes need to remain understandable.
A DigitaLee Marketing article might help an agency owner plan a campaign. A BetulBetul.com feature might explain the background of a company or introduce its founder.
If I started again, I would write down that distinction before expanding the content.
I would also be clear about relationships. Because I founded both brands, a BetulBetul.com feature about DigitaLee Marketing should be understood in that context.
That clarity matters to how I want to build trust.
6. I Would Build Repeatable Processes Sooner
Creative work benefits from attention and judgment. It also benefits from having routine details organised.
For BetulBetul.com, a story brief can identify the subject, reader questions, information to verify and images required.
For DigitaLee Marketing, a campaign brief can establish the audience, offer, deliverables, approval process and enquiry destination.
If I began again, I would create simple working checklists earlier. Their purpose would be to reduce avoidable confusion and leave more attention for the decisions that require thought.
Personally, I would become more deliberate about how I organise files, record feedback and hand work over.
These habits are less visible than a finished campaign, but they affect how reliably the work gets done.
7. I Would Be More Selective About New Tools
Marketing tools will keep changing. Curiosity is useful, but every new tool creates another decision about time and attention.
If I started again, I would evaluate tools against a specific task.
Can this help organise research? Does it improve a draft? Can it make an internal process easier to review? What still needs a person to check it?
For BetulBetul.com, that means keeping factual verification and editorial responsibility central. For DigitaLee Marketing, it means assessing whether a tool improves the work for the client.
I would give myself permission to learn selectively rather than feeling that every new feature needs an immediate place in my workflow.
8. I Would Define Progress More Carefully
Starting again, I would want a clearer definition of progress than simply producing more content or being active on more platforms.
For a marketing project, useful progress may involve clearer messaging, more suitable enquiries or a better handover to the sales team.
For BetulBetul.com, it may involve publishing a well-supported story, improving how readers find related articles or establishing a dependable editorial process.
For myself, progress also means being able to explain a decision, recognise uncertainty and identify what I still need to learn.
I would measure outcomes where evidence is available and avoid turning assumptions into success claims.
What I Would Keep
I would keep the willingness to try different kinds of work.
Marketing has given me a reason to learn about businesses, meet people and explore how ideas are communicated. That curiosity connects DigitaLee Marketing with my interest in building BetulBetul.com.
What I would change is how deliberately I turn those experiences into learning.
I would ask clearer questions, keep better records and spend more time developing the information and processes that support the visible work.
Those are priorities I can apply now, without needing to start again.
